NOTICE OF MEETINGS

OPEN BOARD MEETING

Wednesday, August 20, 2003, 9:00 a.m.

  1. Fair value measurement. The Board will discuss issues relating to the scope of the fair value statement developed in the initial phase of the project. (Estimated 60-minute discussion.)

  2. Permitted activities of qualifying special-purpose entities (SPEs). The Board will discuss a summary of comments received from respondents to the FASB Exposure Draft, Qualifying Special-Purpose Entities and Isolation of Transferred Assets. (Estimated 60-minute discussion.)

  3. Pension disclosures. The Board will finalize its discussions about pension plan disclosures. Specific issues to be addressed include (a) multiemployer pension plans, (b) other postretirement benefit plans, and (c) whether a quantitative materiality threshold should be used as a basis for requiring disclosures about pension and/or other postretirement benefit plans. (Estimated 90-minute discussion.)

  4. Open discussion. If necessary, the Board will allow time to discuss minor issues with staff members on technical projects or administrative matters. Those discussions are held following regular Board meetings as topics come up.

Wednesday, August 20, 2003, 1:00 p.m.

Business combinations: purchase method procedures. In its project on purchase method procedures, the Board has tentatively decided to eliminate the requirement in FASB Interpretation No. 4, Applicability of FASB Statement No. 2 to Business Combinations Accounted for by the Purchase Method, to charge to expense certain IPR&D assets acquired in a business combination. The Board will meet with representatives from Eli Lilly and Company to discuss research and development in the pharmaceutical industry and the impact of the Board’s tentative decision. The meeting will be educational, and no decisions are expected. (Estimated 2-hour discussion.)

OPEN EDUCATION SESSIONS

Thursday, August 21, 2003, 2:00 p.m.

The Board will hold educational, non-decision-making sessions to discuss topics that are anticipated to be discussed at the August 27 Board meeting and at future Board meetings. Those topics will be posted to the FASB calendar four days prior to the education session.

OPEN MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE RISK MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

Monday, August 18, 2003, 3:00 p.m.

The Board will meet with representatives of the Risk Management Association to discuss matters of mutual interest.
